Bit off topic for a powersports board, sorry in advance. But half of us end up with a shoulder or a knee that never quite goes back to normal, so maybe its not that off topic after all.
Short version: I went down on gravel last autumn. Nothing dramatic, low side at maybe 25mph, the kind of thing you laugh about in the parking lot. Shoulder took all of it though. Labrum tear. The quote i got locally was just over 19k before the anesthesia line even showed up, and my deductible eats most of that anyway.
Then a guy at work mentioned he had a hip done in Spain years back and i started reading. Thats where it gets messy, because almost every site you land on is an ad wearing a lab coat. "Save 70%" and a stock photo of somebody smiling in scrubs. Nothing about who actually holds the knife.
Stuff i only worked out after way too many tabs open:
- the number in the ad is basically never the number you pay. Implant, the nights in the room, the physio after — those can all be separate lines and sometimes they just dont mention it
- accreditation you can verify yourself, JCI keeps a public registry. Ten minutes, maybe less. Nobody tells you this
- flying home is the bit people underestimate. Clot risk. My surgeon here was pretty blunt about how long you sit tight before a long haul and it was longer than i assumed
The only thing i found that wasnt trying to sell me something was a side by side comparison of clinics and what is actually included in each price — no booking button, no chat-with-our-coordinator popup, just the figures next to each other and what each hospital does and doesnt cover. That is where i realised two of my own quotes were not even comparable. One included four nights inpatient. The other one, one night. Same "price" more or less.
Still havent booked anything. Honestly im not certain i will, theres something about being five thousand miles from home with a fresh shoulder that i keep circling back to at 2am.
Anyone here actually gone through with it? Not fishing for a clinic recommendation really, more — what do you wish you had asked before you got on the plane. I keep feeling like theres one obvious question im not asking.

You’re right that the obvious question is probably not just “How much does it cost?” but “What happens if something goes wrong after I’m back home?” I’d want clear answers about follow-up care, complications, revision surgery, and who is responsible once you leave the country. I’d also compare the surgeon’s actual experience with that specific procedure, not just the hospital’s accreditation. The flight and recovery logistics would make me hesitate too. Saving money sounds great on paper, but having a fresh shoulder and then dealing with a problem thousands of miles away is a very different calculation.
