Been fixing bikes for over 15 years and I still see people get burned on second hand deals. Figured I'd share what I actually look at when someone rolls a used bike into my shop for a pre purchase check.
First thing, cold start only. If the seller has it warmed up when you arrive, that's a red flag. A warm engine hides a lot of sins. Listen for timing chain rattle, valve tick, anything off.
Check the oil. Milky means coolant is getting in somewhere. Metal flakes mean you walk away.
Look at the chain and sprockets. Worn teeth tell you how the owner treated maintenance in general.
And always ask why they're selling. Story that keeps changing is your answer.
