What’s the best way to combine engagement tools with social media marketing?

Lately I’ve been trying to figure out how to connect our engagement tools with our social media strategy. We post regularly and get decent likes, but turning that activity into real customer relationships is tough. I feel like we’re missing a way to track who actually interacts with us and then follow up automatically. Has anyone found a good balance between keeping it personal and still automating parts of it?
