So I finished the top end rebuild on my 78 CB750 about two weeks ago and finally got brave enough to take it on a proper 60 mile loop today. I was nervous honestly, first time I've done valve work on my own. But she fired up on the third kick and ran smoother than she ever did before I tore into it.
Highway stretch was a little sketchy, carbs still need syncing, felt a slight flat spot around 4k. But back roads were pure joy. That old inline four just pulls and pulls. Stopped at a diner halfway and some guy came out to talk about it for 20 minutes, which is half the fun of riding something older I guess.
Anyone else here ride vintage as their daily? Still chasing a small oil weep from the valve cover but honestly for a 46 year old bike I'll take it. Next up is dialing in the carbs. Tips welcome.

Just got back from a 3 day loop through the Blue Ridge and some back roads in Tennessee. Took the 82 KZ750 I rebuilt last winter, still running strong at 78k on the clock lol. Route was basically Asheville up 19W to Burnsville, then over the Roan to Erwin, dropped down through the Nolichucky gorge. If you havent ridden the stretch between Erwin and Hot Springs you're missing out, super twisty, almost no traffic, and the pavement is decent. Only sketchy part was a gravel patch around mile 40 on 212 but it was marked. Camped at a spot outside Hot Springs for 15 bucks. Bike ran great, only issue was a loose mirror I had to tighten twice. Anyone else been out that way this season? Thinking about doing the Cherohala next month if anyone wants to meet up.

So I finally signed up for my first track day next month with my 92 FZR600 that I rebuilt over the winter. Bike runs great on the street but I know track is a whole different animal. What do you guys go through before a track day? I'm thinking fresh oil, new brake fluid, check the pads obviously. Tires are decent Pilot Roads but not track tires, will they be ok for a beginner group? Also do I need to safety wire anything or is that only for advanced groups? And what about taping up lights and mirrors, does the org usually supply tape? Any tips for a first timer would be awesome. Not trying to set lap records just want to survive and have fun. Thanks in advance

Not trying to sound like your dad here, but after 15 years turning wrenches and a lot more than that riding, the close calls that stick with me were never mechanical. Every single one was a car that didnt see me.
Bike was always fine. Brakes fresh, tires good, chain adjusted. None of that matters when someone pulls out of a driveway staring at their phone.
Couple things I do now that I didnt used to. I run my high beam during the day, every ride. I position myself in the lane where I can see a drivers face in their mirror, not just their bumper. And I cover the front brake through every intersection, no exceptions. Costs nothing, saved me more than once.
Not saying ride scared. Just ride like youre invisible, because half the time you are. Anyone else got habits they picked up the hard way?

So I finally got around to wiring up a proper LED headlight on my old CB750 project and man I shouldve done this years ago. I know some guys think its overkill but honestly after a few close calls in traffic I dont care if I look silly. I run it on high beam during the day now and the difference is night and day, cars actually see me coming at intersections.
Only downside is a couple buddies give me grief about blinding people but whatever, id rather be annoying than be a hood ornament. Also added some reflective tape on the forks and my helmet which is cheap insurance.
Curious what you all do for visibility? Anyone running those brake light modulators? Been thinking about one but not sure if theyre worth the hassle. Ride safe out there folks, too many distracted drivers these days.

So me and a couple buddies are planning a 3 day ride next month and I finally got my 82 KZ750 running right after the carb rebuild. Was thinking of doing the Blue Ridge section but honestly worried about the traffic and getting stuck behind RVs the whole time. Anybody got a good loop with twisties and some cheap motels along the way? We're leaving from around Charlotte. Not trying to do 500 miles a day either, the KZ is comfy but my back ain't what it used to be lol. Also if anyone knows good spots to eat on the route that'd be great. Bonus points for roads with almost no cars. Thanks in advance

Been riding 20+ years, mostly wrenching on my own bikes and doing the odd repair job for mates. Passed my test back when you could still do it on a 125 and ride whatever you wanted after two years. Anyway my nephew just got his full licence and keeps going on about doing one of those advanced riding courses. I told him the best training is just seat time and learning to read traffic, but he reckons the instructors teach stuff you don't pick up on your own.
So honest question for anyone who's actually done one. Did it change how you ride or was it mostly common sense dressed up? I'm not against them, just wondering if they're worth the money for a kid who's already pretty sensible on the road. Also curious if the insurance discount is real or just marketing talk.

So my trusty old Joe Rocket textile finally gave up last week, the zipper completely blew out and honestly the armor is probably dust by now. Been rocking that thing since like 2009 so I guess I got my moneys worth lol.
Anyway I'm in the market for a new jacket and I'm kind of overwhelmed by all the options now. I do mostly commuting and weekend rides, some touring in the summer. Live in a place where it rains a lot so waterproof matters.
Been looking at the Klim stuff but holy cow the prices. Are they really worth it? Also curious about the newer Alpinestars and Rev'it stuff. Anyone running a jacket they absolutely love? Bonus points if it vents well cause I run hot.
Also should I be looking at getting a separate rain layer instead of relying on the jacket? Let me know what works for you guys.

Been wrenching on bikes for 15+ years and I keep getting asked this one by newer riders. Figured I'd throw it out to the group since I'm curious what owners actually think. On paper the Versys 650 has more grunt, that 649cc parallel twin pulls noticeably harder up top and the adjustable suspension is a genuine step up if you're heavier or carry luggage. But the CB500X is lighter, feels more flickable in town and the valve service intervals are easier to live with. From a maintenance standpoint the Honda is a bit simpler to work on, though nothing on either is a nightmare. I've torn into both engines and honestly the Kawasaki needs a bit more attention on the cam chain side long term. So what's the verdict from people who actually ride them daily? I care less about spec sheet numbers and more about what annoys you after 20k miles.

So I found this 83 CB550SC on marketplace for $900. Guy says it ran last year but the carbs need cleaning and the tank has some rust. Ive restored a couple old Hondas before so Im not scared of carb work, but I wanted to ask you guys what specific stuff to look for on this model. I know the Nighthawk 550s had that hydraulic clutch thing and I think some had cam chain tensioner issues? Also the rear shock on these is that odd single shock setup right? Any known electrical gremlins with the 83s? Im bringing a compression tester and a flashlight, going to try and get him down to 700 if the compression is good. Main thing Im worried about is parts availability honestly, seems like the 650s got way more aftermarket support. Anybody here own one or wrenched on one? What am I walking into lol. Thanks in advance.
